Hekhsher Tzedek
The Conservative movement has been in the news quite a bit lately (did you see the NY Times front page story last week?), regarding the new Conservative initiative regarding Kashrut certification and justice, called "Hekhsher Tzedek," especially as it relates to working conditions at the Agriprocessors plant in Postville Iowa. I discussed the matter in depth last Shabbat morning, in light of the fact that it was Labor day weekend and the laws of Kashrut were reiterated in the weekly portion. This coming Shabbat we read the immorta verse "Justice, justice you shall pursue," als an apporpriate time to reflect upon the treatment of workers. You can find several sources regarding this exciting new initiative at http://www.hekhshertzedek.org/info.html, including a resolution that is being discussed by our board.
