In This Moment: Joe Lieberman, z'l

In This Moment

Senator Joe Lieberman z'l

Tributes are pouring in for our local hero, one who never shied from controversy, Joe Lieberman. Controversial perhaps, but in 2000 Joe Lieberman blew Sandy Koufax out of the water, replacing him overnight as the prime role model for every Jewish child.  Beyond politics, he was a consummate mensch who made everyone in the room feel like his best friend. He used to call me his mother’s "favorite,” for which I thanked him, knowing that my own mother would be kvelling, (although she would simultaneously remind me that HE called his mother every day).

Click to read my posting about how Jews felt ambivalent regarding his historic candidacy for VP in 2000 and especially when he ran for President in 2004. That historic moment when a Jew was just a few butterfly ballots away from the vice presidency is now even more significant as we reflect on the turmoil confronting American Jews today, and all the what-ifs of the past quarter century.

The Yediot headline states, "Broken" - "In Washington they claim that Netanyahu is sabotaging relations for political needs. The Prime Minister is furious with the Americans and cancels the delegation (he reversed himself later on). The bottom line is that precisely at the worst time, the most important alliance is being shaken."

The other big story in Israel today is the legal wrangling involving Haredi conscription. This could be the straw that breaks the government's back.
