On a cool, crisp morning on a quintessential New England green, many hundreds gathered to celebrate what is best about America - our precious freedoms to assemble and speak our minds - while at the same time raising our voices in protest at the abuses of the Trump administration. For those who are Jewish, being there on Shabbat was, as I have written before, potentially the fulfillment of a great mitzvah, since many lives could be saved by our raising our voices in such numbers (estimates surpass 7 million nationwide, the largest in modern US history) to save American democracy.
In a peculiar only-in-America quirk, the protesters encircled Guilford Green while a previously scheduled event celebrating The Gilmore Girls took place within that space.
As they once said on that show: “Wait wait, look around for a second. You notice? It’s not so scary anymore.”
That’s sort of how I felt yesterday. It’s not so scary anymore. We are far from alone, despite the capitulation of so many supposed leaders. But we cannot allow ourselves to tire for a moment as we continue this crusade.
America is clearing her throat.
